Promethean Planet

Promethean Planet has a large selection of Math games to choose from. I had the class play a game of long division. The particular game I chose projected two like division problems on the white board. The class was divided into two teams. One person from each team came forward and solved the problem. If they were correct they received a point. If they finished first and were correct they received an extra point. All students were called forward. They seemed to enjoy the competition.

Clickers

I observed a Math class that used clickers for division practice. Each student solved a problem then entered their answer. The teacher could monitor who completed the problem and if the answer was correct. She then revealed the correct answer, and the percent correct to the entire class. What I liked about it was that it made all students accountable and the teacher could easily see who was performing and who was not. The students really liked the novelty of it.

I had students create and present their own math tutorials. They worked in groups and were very engaged in the activities. The presentations were enjoyed and beneficial. It would have been easier if each classroom had more ipads available for the students, but other than that all went well.

I liked the idea of students registering their device on FCPS and only using this wifi access point so it's filtered.

Project Based Learning

Project based or hands-on learning allows students to become more engaged and gives them the opportunity to express themselves while learning about a particular subject. Since the advent of MAP we seemed to have moved away from this teaching style and have become too focused on testing content. This leaves little or no time from extended projects.

Digital tools and writing

Digital tools for writing are just that...tools. Using these to incorporate sound and video to a writing piece will enhance the presentation and spark a greater interest in writing. But this alone will not produce better writers. There is still a need for basic punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure as a foundation for writing.
